MAY 23 - FRENCH SNACK DAY
Our final task for French will take place on Tuesday, May 23. Students will bring home a copy of their snack recipe today and should practice explaining their recipe in French. The focus here is doing the best we can, and giving this a try. Students need to have their ingredients, dishes, and tools necessary to make their snack in front of the class (if working with a partner, they should have a list of what they've decided they will be responsible for). All students need to bring a plate and a set of cutlery as well so they can sample their classmates creations. MAY 29 - FINAL STEM PROJECT Shoeboxes still needed for our final STEM challenge on the 29th. Thanks so much! FINAL DAYS OF TERM Our final days of the third term will focus on:

We had a great time this morning creating 'Pompom Launchers" as part of our multi-age activity with the grade 6/7 class! Students were given a choice of materials, created designs and tested them out *FRENCH forms due for upcoming snack project. I will let you know the date for brining in ingredients for presentations (will be in a couple of weeks likely). We need to get our writing finished and practiced first before presenting *TRACK MEET - Thanks for emailing me to indicate interest. I've recorded the student names and will get back to families regarding details of events, etc once I get the information. *MATH - Our multiplication is coming along, but continued review at home is essential. Grade 4's will be moving on to division next week. Grade 5's will be looking at multiplying decimals. *WRITING - Keep in mind that 10 sample of student writing need to be brought to portfolio meeting. These should be a variety of writing types, and do not need to be all in good copy form. I want to see how your child develops their ideas, their vocabulary and description, and their application of spelling and punctuation rules to everyday writing. **SOCIAL STUDIES - Continued work this week with the Charter of Rights and a focus on responsibilities and freedoms. I'm hoping to be successful with the group to use the app 'Explain Everything' to have them represent symbolically and in their own words the rights and freedoms that are most important to them and why. **BUTTON BLANKET ACTIVITY TIME CHANGE - We are now scheduled to take part in this activity on May 1 from 9-10 AM Please confirm with me if you are able to volunteer. Thanks. Students were taught the concept of multi-digit multiplication today. In general, students need a lot more practice with their basic multiplication facts as well as practice with 2 and 3 digit multiplication. I've attached a couple of videos to help with the concept at home. Time spent practicing and working on multiplying large numbers now is vital - I'm speaking from experience, as both my boys are older now and the concepts in math move quickly in high school especially. HOMEWORK
For Monday, April 10 students need to bring an item in that they can share a memory about. MATERIALS NEEDED I am planning a couple of STEM challenges for the 4-7 students this term and need students to bring in some supplies: -shoeboxes -marbles -paper rolls UPCOMING EVENTS -SPEECHFEST- I will need to know this week the title of your child's speech if they are participating in the school wide Speechfest. -MAY 1 - Blanket Initiative - still looking for parent volunteers to assist us with this activity the afternoon from 1:30-3:00 We've had a great start to our third term and hopefully spring will be here soon!
FRENCH - all of us are learning about the world of snacks. I will be sending home a note next week regarding our final project READ to SELF - students are spending the start of each day reading on their own, and working on reading response activities that they are sharing with partners. They can choose either fiction or non-fiction, and the goal is to have them think deeper about text, reflect and be able to speak to a partner about what they have learned. ART - We are working on a canvas painting - can't wait to see them come to life! SOCIAL STUDIES - Next week we will be looking at the Charter of Rights together. UPCOMING EVENTS
Now that portfolios are over, and we are heading into the third term, I thought I'd take a moment to post a few resources to help with the final term. BIG IDEAS - Here are some pages that have all the big ideas for each grade and subject. This is a great way to keep track of what has been completed for the term, and can be highlighted and brought to portfolio meeting.
**WRITING - Each student needs 10 writing samples. The focus and expectation is on developed writing (complete and varied sentences, description and detail, opening and concluding sentences) as well as a variety of writing (e.g. letters, reports, stories, poems, opinion writing, etc.) Here's a link you may find useful for each grade for some writing activities Grade 4 www.education.com/activity/fourth-grade/ela/writing/ Grade 5 www.education.com/activity/fifth-grade/ela/writing/ To help you understand what is expected for each grade level with writing, please refer to the BC Performance Standards for each grade for personal writing.
**READING RESPONSES - Here are some documents to help you with reading response
*NOVEL STUDY - There are lots of ideas out there to incorporate into a novel study when you search the novel you choose and novel study ideas for grade 4 or 5. This is a generic novel study that can be used with a book of your choice.
*MATH - I will be sending home a work package again that complements the learning at school for the third term. This package is designed to provide practice and reinforcement of what is taught on the face-to-face days. Note that there are other portions of the math curriculum that need to be covered at home by the end of the year (refer to learning plan). A good resource to refer to in order to ensure your child is completing grade level work is the Math Focus 4 or 5 text available from the library. There is also a workbook that can be copied that can be worked on at home. *CAREER EDUCATION - This is a suitable resource for some of the competencies for the career education curriculum that will be reported on in June. There are some pages in this booklet that aren't relevant, but referring to the learning plan can help you with choosing what's appropriate.
*PE and HEALTH EDUCATION - The three components of the health education curriculum can be worked on through the website kidshealth.org/. There are videos, questions that can be printed of and discussed (as a parent you can scribe and record the discussion points covered. Also a screen shot of lesson completion can be used for portfolio. Lastly, for the final term, I will be asking you to bring all pictures and videos from home on a USB to our portfolio meeting. That way at our meeting I can ensure that they can all be uploaded and also a good reference as we meet.
Thanks for all your hard work this past term. Looking forward to our final term together! If you haven't been by, come and check out our winter tree art outside our classroom! The students did a fantastic job! We are at the finishing stages of writing two paragraphs about the winter. Stay tuned for them!
Math - We continued to review adding decimals, as well as subtraction with and without regrouping. Next week we move on to multiplication strategies for basic facts, but will continue our work with subtraction extending it to decimals. The students were introduced to the math web site http://www.math-play.com/index.html A great tool to use at home too, and works on ipads and desktops! We've had a busy and productive couple of days here!
GRADE 5's have a swimming notice home today, and preferences need to be back to me by January 31st. Highlights of our learning this week included:
-working on recognizing parts of a complete sentence (subject and predicate) -addition and subtraction strategies, addition of large numbers -cultural presentation on Tuesday morning (great live music, and a little dancing too) -looking at life in New France and listing pros and cons of living there versus other opportunities fro men and women during that time period NEXT WEEK - We are joining the Grade 6/7 class for an Applied Skills and Design challenge activity on Tuesday morning. For the challenge, we need students to bring a Lego mini-figure to school. If you are willing to bring more than one to share, that would be great for any students that may not have Lego. Welcome back to school everyone! Hope you all had a fun and restful break!
